~ ~ ~ Frustration begins where knowledge ends. ~ ~ ~
We were frustrated dog owners many years ago and with more than one dog. Instead of staying frustrated we attended as many professional trainer seminars given by Veterinarians and Board Certified Behaviorists we could find (and continue to attend them), read every research paper written by Veterinarians and Board Certified Behaviorists (and continue to read them), studied many many hours of calming signals and dog interactions and studied psychology of dogs and horses and guinea pigs and bunnies and chickens. And tried and practiced the easiest and lowest pressure training methods developed through scientific research. Why horses and guinea pigs and bunnies and chickens you ask? Well because if you can understand and communicate with horses, guinea pigs and bunnies (predator to prey animals) you can definitely understand and communicate with and train dogs (predator to predator).
At tiredDog goodDog we focus on explaining why the behavior is occurring and if it is a desirable behavior, how to control it and if undesirable, how to curb it using language the dog understands and people can easily learn. Think of us as dog-human translators helping to clear up the communication and speed up the learning.
We specialize in and prefer to work with active/herding/working breeds and active families which include their dogs as part of their active family. Dogs with regular active jobs and clear job duties are much better behaved.
Our Mentors include: (more will be added as our training and education are neverending)

*(Cattledog person and neverending pursuit of why/how and speed-timing-repetition for a calm dog with impulse control) RIP
Patricia McConnell Ph.D. Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB) www.patriciamcconnell.com
*(blunt and sometimes outside the box but understood)
Ingrid Rugaas en.turid-rugaas.no

*(ALL puppy/dog/kitten/cat owners and future owners should read these two books- Before You Get Your Puppy and After You Get Your Puppy - click on the titles for direct links to the full books in pdf format for free on dogstardaily.com)
AVSAB online (American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior) avsabonline.org
*4 MUST-reads (links to pdf files):
EARLY Puppy Socialization is CRITICAL- beginning at 7 weeks after the first vac & deworming
Dominance theory - forcing submission to correct a behavior is what you saw on that tv show and is in fact dangerous
Punishment and how it can seriously go wrong/become dangerous. Physical punishment, choke chains, pinch collars, and electronic collars should not be used as a first-line or early-use treatment for behavior problems. Instead focus on what you want your dog TO DO by reinforcing only desired behaviors.
